Julian Wright’s basketball career at Kansas will be officially over soon.
Wright, who declared for the NBA draft in early April, will sign with an agent sometime this week, according to KU coach Bill Self.
Wright, who’s expected to be a lottery pick in the June draft, has chosen to sign with agent Rob Pelinka, best known for negotiating Kobe Bryant’s $137 million deal in 2004, the largest contract in NBA history. Pelinka also works for Los Angeles Clippers forward Corey Maggette and has already signed former Arizona guard Marcus Williams in this year’s draft.
Pelinka played college basketball at Michigan. He was a freshman on the Wolverines’ 1989 national championship team and came off the bench during the Fab Five era.
Wright, a 6-foot-8 sophomore forward, had stated all season that he was coming back for his junior season so that he could finish his degree. His decision to declare early and sign with an agent came as a shock to many.
Sophomore guard Brandon Rush also has declared for the draft but said he will not sign with an agent, keeping his college eligibility intact.
Brandon Rush has until June 18 to withdraw his name from the draft.
