The Los Angeles Clippers are expected to soon sign development league all-star guard Von Wafer to a 10-day contract, team sources said Tuesday.
As for a potential major move before Thursday's trading deadline, the Los Angeles Clippers are not close to completing a deal. General Manager Elgin Baylor and Coach Mike Dunleavy do not comment on trade talks, but sources said other teams have continued to inquire about disgruntled sixth man Corey Maggette.
Corey Maggette, who says he dislikes playing under Dunleavy, would prefer to play elsewhere. Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald T. Sterling, however, is not interested in trading Corey Maggette.
Wafer, a former Los Angeles Lakers, is third in the NBDL in scoring, averaging 19.6 points for the Colorado 14ers.
With Cuttino Mobley slowed because of a groin injury, and Doug Christie having left the team, the Los Angeles Clippers determined they needed another big wing player. A former standout at Florida State, Wafer is listed at 6 feet 5 and 210 pounds.
The Los Angeles Lakers drafted Wafer in the second round of the 2005 draft (39th overall). He was put on waivers in October 2006.
A Los Angeles Clippers roster spot opened because Christie, in a letter sent to the team during the All-Star break, declined to complete his second 10-day contract, which would have expired after tonight's game against the Phoenix Suns at Staples Center.
In six games with the Los Angeles Clippers, Christie, who did not rejoin the team after the break, averaged 2.2 points and shot 29.4% from the field.
The Los Angeles Clippers also signed point guard Alvin Williams to a 10-day contract in January. He was not offered a second contract.
